Lonhro Colt Heads the Betting for the Gr.1 Blue Diamond Stakes

Lonhro juvenile Secession is now favourite for next month's Gr.1 Arrowfield Stud Blue Diamond Stakes 1200m at Caulfield.

The Peter Snowdon trained colt has had one start for one win when he was presented at Sandown in mid November .

Here he defeated Redoute's Choice filly Shaaheq who subsequently ran second to Crystal Lily in the Listed Blue Diamond Preview earlier this week.

Westbury Stud will offer a filly by Lonhro as well as two yearlings by Redoute's Choice at the NZB Karaka Premier Sale which will commence on Monday.

Captain Rio's Contest Group Events at Trentham on Cup Day

Captain Rio could be in for a lucrative weekend, just days out from the 2010 New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sales with two live chances in the feature races at Trentham.

The Westbury Stud based stallion will be represented by the promising filly Aunt Daisy in the Gr.3 Desert Gold Stakes 3YO 1600m.

Aunt Daisy was impressive when winning two starts back and did not let her supporters down when she was a gutsy third at her next outing.

Trained by her breeders Paddy and Sylvia Kay, the Captain Rio three-year-old is a half sister to her stablemate Spiro (Pyrus) who made it three wins on end last Saturday at Trentham.

While Aunt Daisy will line up against glamour filly Katie Lee, co-trainer Sylvia Kay said her charge had trained on well and deserved a chance a group honours.

Later in the day Captain Rio's most notable performer, I l Quello Veloce will take her place in the Gr.1 $200,000 Thorndon Mile.

The John Sargent trained mare comes into the race in-form and is once again ridden by "The Godfather" NG Harris.

Il Quello Veloce is yet to win this preparation but has not been far away and was in outstanding form this time last year.

Westbury Stud will offer a full sister to Il Quello Veloce at the NZB Karaka Premier Sale on Monday when Lot 73 goes through the ring.

Flying In at the Right Time

Thorn Park gelding Flying In produced a timely effort to score a convincing win in the HK$850,000 Mount Cameron Handicap over 1650m at Happy Valley last night.

Flying In was sold through the Westbury Stud draft at the 2007 Gold Coast Magic Million Sale for A$150,000 and was purchased by leading Queensland trainer Alan Bailey. The son of talented racemare Arlanda, Flying In was a winner at two in Australia and stakes placed in the Listed Australian Post 2YO Plate at Eagle Farm before being sold to Hong Kong interests as a 3YO.

Trained by Manfred Man, Flying In was given a perfect run in the trail by leading jockey Brett Prebble and proved a class above his opposition at Happy Valley - capping off two very good efforts for second and third at his most recent starts.

Westbury will offer an attractive half sister to Flying In at the Select Session by Darley stallion Reset. The filly has thrown a lot to her sire - and even more so to her grandsire Zabeel - while the family is more than capable of getting a good filly having produced Grand Prix Stakes winner Saint Minerva, AJC Sires Produce winner Rhythmic Charm, and the high class performer Sheralee.

Hong Kong Group 2 winner More Bountiful is also from the family as is quality Perth galloper Universal Ruler.

Dubai Destined for Further Success

Darley sire Dubai Destination has enjoyed a great week with five individual winners in Hong Kong and Australia during the past few days as well as a black type performer in Dubai.

On Wednesday night at Happy Valley the son of Kingmambo racked up a double when High Return and Yue Lu Treasure scored over 1200m and 1650m respectively; while on Saturday the Gai Waterhouse stable scored an impressive win with Gigas over 1500m at Rosehill, Klubbing was successful at the Gold Coast, and Swift Sands won over 1000m at Toowoomba.

Earlier in the week Dubai Destination went close to adding another stakes winner to his record when his son Meeriss went down narrowly in the Jebel Ali Stakes in the United Arab Emirates.

Westbury will offer a very athletic colt by Dubai Destination from the stakes placed mare Twilight Rose in the Select Session at Karaka. Listed as Lot 779, the colt is a half brother to the current performer Rosie Sunrise (by Rock of Gibraltar) and is out of a half sister to the Group 2 winner Buckle My Shoe and Listed winner Princess Marizza.

Fastnet Rocks to Further Success

Coolmore's exciting young sire Fastnet Rock is marching on from one success to the next on a daily basis, and uncovered another quality performer on Saturday at Rosehill when the Kris Lees-trained filly Elimbari scored a convincing win on debut when taking out the Schweppes Mineral Water Handicap from Celts (Lonhro) and Valour (Exceed and Excel) in the hands of Hugh Bowman.

Fastnet Rock has enjoyed a fantastic season to date with his first crop of 3YO's and includes a Group 1 win by Irish Lights in the VATC 1000 Guineas in the spring as well as the exciting South African stakes winner Curved Ball, and the high class Australian colts Wanted, Stryker and Dino Mak. The filly is the second foal from Grand Mosque, her first foal was sold at last year's sale for $100,000, and the mare has a Lonhro filly born in 2009.

Weekend Treble for Not a Single Doubt

The winner of the AJC Cannonbury Stakes at two and the MRC Zeditave Stakes as a 3YO, Not a Single Doubt has made a great start to this stud career with more than 30 winners to date including five stakes performers. Westbury will present a lovely filly by Not a Single Doubt in the Premier Session at Karaka. She is Lot 283 out of the Group 3 winning mare Bahira and thus a half sister to the Fortuna Syndication performer Rio Fortune, winner of the Listed Castletown Stakes as a juvenile in the 2008-09 season. The grand-dam of the filly is Conifer Bay who included the ARC Championship Stakes Gr.1. among her four wins and was runner up in the New Zealand Oaks Gr. 1.

First Crop of the Speedster Gonski

2010 will mark the appearance of the first progeny by the Danehill speedster Gonski. Standing at Darley Stud, Gonski was a true blue speed machine winning two of his 8 starts and was very effective at all distances up to 1410m.

Gonski won the Listed VRC Poseidon Stakes beating the Group 1 winners Perfectly Ready and Ferocity, finished second to the very smart Jet Spur in the STC Heritage Stakes at Rosehill, and finished fourth to God's Own in the Caulfied Guineas Gr.1.

Waitui Angel won five races from 1400m to 1600m and stakes of more than A$87,000. Listed as Lot 796, the attractive bay filly is well balanced, has great muscle and looks an ideal 2YO prospect in the making.

Magic Millions Winner Boost for Flying Spur Mares

Saturday's Gold Coast Magic Millions Classic winner Military Rose was a boost to the impressive record Flying spur is developing as a broodmare sire in addition to his marvelous record as a leading sire.

By the ill-fated sire General Nediym, Military Rose was emphatic in her Millions win and comes from the Flying Spur mare Bella Maddalena who won twice from seven starts on the track and is now well on the way to making her mark as a broodmare. The winner of the 1995 Golden Slipper Stakes, Flying Spur is the sire of the dam Golden Slipper winner Sebring, Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Headway, WATC Derby winner Grand Journey, quality Singapore galloper The Hornet, Minnesota Shark, Hot 'n' Ready etc.

The Michael, John, and Wayne Hawkes training partnership unveiled a promising juvenile in the form Roulettes when the Flying Spur filly made it two from two when she took out the Listed St Albans Stakes at Moonee Valley on Sunday in the hands of Steven King.

The intention was to send Roulettes to the spelling paddock after the St Albans Stakes, but in light of the impressive nature of her win, her trainers may now be tempted to bring her back for the Blue Diamond Prelude in February. A daughter of the Canny Lad mare Discretion, Roulettes is a half sister to the talented sprinter-miler Royal Discretion and is yet another stakes winner for Arrowfield Stud's Golden Slipper winning sire.

Lonhro has been represented by the stakes winners Denman, O'Lonhro, Demerit, Deer Valley, Secession, Trim, and Beaded already this season while the winners keep flowing on a weekly basis for the former champion.

Lot 169 in New Zealand Bloodstock's Premier Session is a brown filly by Lonhro from Siuya (O'Reilly). The high class racemare Bellini Rose (Faltaat-Raise the Play) has returned a positive test to Arrowfield Stud's champion sire Redoute's Choice at her first sojourn to the breeding shed.

The winner of more than A$500,000 in prizemoney, Bellini Rose's best win came in the Group 2 VRC Blazer Stakes at Flemington where she defeated the likes of Absolut Glam, Viking Turf Belle, Forensics and company. Charge Forward Filly Scores Impressively

Starcraft Off the Mark in Australia

Former high class racehorse and Champion Miler Starcraft was credited with his first Southern Hemisphere winner when Star Witness scored a game victory in the two-year-old event at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

With just three runners to date in Australia, Starcraft has started his career in excellent fashion with one winner and two placed horses to date; while it is only fair to expect his progeny to excel markedly as they mature. Star Witness bears a strong resemblance to his sire Starcraft, and while racing greenly in the run, he proved too strong for his opposition over the final stages of the 1000m trip.

Out of the Group 3 winning Lion Hunter mare Leone Chiara, Star Witness was a product of the 2009 Magic Millions Sale, knocked down to Danny O'Brien for A$150,000. Star Witness is trained at Flemington by Danny O'Brien and was ably handled in Saturday's race by leading apprentice Nicholas Hall.

Trained by Paul O'Sullivan, Fellowship finished strongly to overhaul Hong Kong Champions Mile winner Sight Winner by three-quarters of a length and both horses look to be serious contenders for the Grand Final in December. John Size looks to have the Westbury Stud-bred Sight Winner peaking perfectly and with a 5lb turn around in the weights come the International Mile one would expect Sight Winner will prove to be a far tougher obstacle for Fellowship in three weeks time.
