Sirrio in Fine Fettle For EllerslieMonday, Jan 11, 2010
Captain Rio's talented son Sirrio will head to Ellerslie on Saturday for his Karaka Million dress rehearsal. The Matamata youngster is assured of a start in the January 31 feature with a win and a placing from his previous three starts.
He was impressive when successful on debut and backed up that effort with a runner-up finish in the Listed Murdoch Newell Stakes at Pukekohe. Last time out he finished fifth in the Listed Wentwood Grange Stakes at the Waikato meeting.
"He was a tad disappointing there, but having said that while the Te Rapa track has been a revelation in the winter some horses don't handle the sandy base - it was his first time there and going that way around," Noble said. "He's qualified for the big Ellerslie race so there's no pressure and he'll have his final run for it on Saturday."
A $15,000 Select Sale purchase last year, Sirrio is a half-brother to two winners out of the Clay Hero mare Lacy Tops. She is a half-sister to the Gr 2 performed mare Ballroom Lady from the family of the Gr 2 Concorde Handicap winner and Gr 1 Railway Handicap runner-up Needuask.
