Trans-Tasman Success For Westbury

Westbury Stud played a winning hand on both sides of the Tasman yesterday with the Karaka farm-bred and sold Dalai leading the way at the Ipswich meeting. The six-year-old's success was backed up at home with Faltaat the dam-sire of impressive Pukekohe Park debut winner Bernards Choice.

Dalai was purchased out of Westbury's 2005 Select Sale draft at Karaka for $36,000 by New South Wales agent Tony Bott. By O'Reilly, she is out of a half-sister to dual Gr 1 winner Calm Harbour (Thorndon Mile, Captain Cook Stakes) and a family that also numbers The A Train (Gr 2 Adelaide Cup) and Sand Sweeper (Gr 3 Easter Cup, Canterbury Gold Cup) within its ranks.

She has proved a good moneyspinner for connections with three wins and 13 placings - eight of them runner-up finishes - from 29 appearances. Her latest middle distance victory took her career earnings to more than $57,000.

Bernards Choice bounded to a clear-cut win at the first time of asking for trainers Gareth McRae and Garry Newham. By Black Minnaloushe, she is out of Faltaat's daughter Altaat who boasts Gr 1 Auckland Cup winner Perhaps and the Gr 2 Blamey Stakes winner Walk On Air in her family background.
