A Gr 1 pedigree was to the fore yesterday at the Pukekura Raceway where a lightly-tried four-year-old was an impressive winner. At only his second start, The Caribbean came from well back in the field with a storming finish to break his maiden.
The gelding is by Westbury Stud's proven top-level producer Faltaat out of the former high-class racemare Aimee Jay. The daughter of Famous Star won 11 races, including the Gr 1 Easter Handicap, the Gr 2 Travis Stakes (twice) and the Gr 2 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes (twice). She was also Gr 1 placed in the Waikato Draught Sprint and Otaki-Maori WFA and was a multiple Gr 2 and 3 placegetter.
Aimee Jay was prepared by Taranaki horseman Aidan Schumacher, whose family owned the mare and they also bred and race The Caribbean. He is trained at Wanganui by Wayne Marshment and his New Plymouth success followed a debut seventh on the track last month.
